Accommodations in Belize

Travelers with a penchant for personalized service and attention to detail will find themselves enchanted with the myriad of places to stay. There's a room to suit any budget or style. Belize's variety of accommodations enhances a unique travel experience. When it comes to selecting vacation resorts, please don't be misled by the term "small". We mean resort properties in terms of rooms, not size or spaciousness. Although most small properties may have a limited number of rooms, they are big on comfort and personal service. High on the list of other advantages are things like variety, location, ambiance and price – all primary considerations when planning a vacation.

For visitors looking to discover the cultural and ecological diversity throughout the country, there are several campgrounds and you can participate in the Maya Home Stay program.

Much of the fun in Belize is found off the beaten track. Many visitors spend their days exploring and discovering the non-stop excitement. In such an antractive destination, flexibility and extra cash to spend may be more important that the size of the resort. Tranquil seaside resorts painted with soft or bright pastel colors dot the shoreline. Several of the offshore cayes are home to premier dive resorts and exclusive fishing lodges lying peacefully along the seafront. Isolated from the tourist hustle and bustle, these properties offer many of the comforts of a hotel "in town". Some inns and resorts are situated along narrow roads and sandy streets. Others are tucked away between clusters od coconut palms. They are all special in their own ways, each deserving of consideration.

Regardless where you come from, chances are you'll find the place that's right for you. When you visit Belize, thing small but have a grand time.

Soliman Bay at the Riviera Maya

Soak up Soliman Bay

Aslice of solitude served up fresh with incredible snorkeling and true peace and quiet is on the menu this November at las Bahias de Punta Soliman. These two bays, separated by a rocky point, offer guests the chance to completely escape from the wilds of the world and find the real meaning of relaxation. There are a multitude of options – from daytrips to weekend getaways – for those wishing to savor a piece of paradise, here are some ways to soak up Soliman Bay.

Beginning with the most desirable of escapes from reality – and over night or two – it is nestled in the palms along the southern bay that one finds a wide-ranging variety of accommodations. From rustic palapas of stilts lit only by candlelight to romantic beach bungalows offering everything needed, those seeking a serene commune with nature need look no further. However, for those who cannot imagine a Caribbean night without the steady hum of air-conditioner, there are some luxury villas that afford guests nothing less than five-star amenities. So, there is truly something for everyone.

We chose to overnight in the most rustic of options, a palapa with no electricity perched at the treetops with nothing obstructing our view of the sunrise over the turquoise bay. The Last Resort and Palapas Caribe are recommendation for the "simplicity route". Set gently in the loving hands of Mother Nature, the lack of power ensured that no lights could interfere with our hours of stargazing and no machine noises could drown out the lullaby of gently lapping waves. Silence – nature's true medicine – is guaranteed way to decompress.

We filled our days with kayaking and snorkeling all over the enormous bay. Huge conch, tons of rays, turtles, and colorful Caribbean fish, as well as a handful of moray eels and octopus were some of the aquatic treasures we were lucky enough to see. And, with such a long stretch of coastline, we found ample exercise with kayaking and walking the length of the bay looking for beach treasures. After satisfying our desires for activity, we curled up on our beach chairs under the palms with our books and alternated between snoozing, sunbathing and reading in the gentle sea breezes.

For those not staying at Soliman Bay, or unable to squeeze in one last get-away before the star of the high-season, these same delightful daytime activities are all available in the northern bay of Soliman at Restaurant Oscar and Lalo. Dine on the freshest seafood, kayak and snorkel in a private and pristine bay, and lounge in the beach or in the hammocks all the while sipping on ice-cold beers or margaritas. Escape to Soliman Bay in the Riviera Maya; you are worth it.

First explorers of the Maya World

John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood, First explorers of the Maya World

John Lloyd Stephens along with the artist Frederick Catherwood braved the jungles of Yucatan, Guatemala and Honduras to become the first English-speaking travelers to explore this region originally known only by the Mayans.

On a trip to London, Stephens met Catherwood, an Englishman who was already well known for his drawings of archeological digs in Egypt and Jerusalem. Catherwood's talent lay in his ability to portrait ancient monuments with great accuracy.

In 1839 President Martin Van Buren appointed Stephens as special ambassador to Central America for the purpose of negotiation treaties with several countries. Stephens immediately connected Catherwood reccuesting he accompany him on the project. They set out for Central America. This journey spawned Stephen's first work on the Mayans "Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan". In the preface Stephens states it is the most extensive journey made by a foreigner to the Yucatan Peninsula, containing accounts of 44 ruined cities where antiquarian remains were found.

According to Stephens, the existence of most of these ruins was unknown to the residents of Merida, as few had been visited by outsiders. Desolate and overgrown with trees, the only evidence of these structures appeared as grass-covered mounds. To the untrained eye, it would take a wild stretch of imagination to visualize the former grandeur of these sites.

When Stephens, Catherwood and their physician Dr. Cabot, first started out from Merida, they had no "servants in attendance", a travesty for explorers at that time. They had no map of Yucatan as none existed. The closest thing they could find that would set them in the right direction was a map in manuscript from only, given to them by Dona Joaquina Peon, with the disclaimer that it was inaccurate. So for Stephens and Catherwood, their expedition truly was a journey into the unknown, and it would include logging the number of hours from village to village and the pace of their horses to better assist the next explorers who would eventually follow in their footsteps.

One wonders how Stephens prepared for this journey. What sources and materials were required? In his books, Stephens jumped right into the explorations themselves with little fanfare given to his preparations, but no doubt they were lengthy and costly. Catherwood was determined to make use of his Daguerreotype camera as no one in their group knew how to use it, the man set up in a quick portrait taking business in their Merida hotel before heading into the field. This familiarized them with the camera, and after developing confidence in its use, they changed hats; became explorers again, and headed into the Yucatan jungle.

The once great city of Mayapan, 47 miles southeast of Merida, was the first ruin sighting. "For ages, these ruins went unnoticed" commented Stephens. Now linked to the Post Classic Period, Mayapan was founded in 1007 by the great ruler Kukulcan. After the fall of Chichen Itza around 1200, Mayapan became the dominant force in the Mayan world, their center of civilization before Spanish arrival.

So, according to legend, by making a wish and giving the butterfly its freedom, the wish will be taken to the heavens and be granted. We have gathered to grant this couple all our best wishes and are about to set these butterflies free in trust that all these wishes will be granted.
