The Yucatan Peninsula is located on a limestone platform which was created millions of years ago. Throughout various glacial periods, the ocean level has varied, and this platform found itself submerged by water. When the level of the ocean drops again, the caves begin forming. The heavy rain falling on these formations dissolves through the rock the carbonic acid from the soil and leaves in putrefaction. This carbonic acid mix carved the fragile rock, creating underground passages in which water would find its way back to the ocean. In this process stalagtites and stalagmites were also formed. During the last glacial period, the oceans were 100 feet below their actual level. Around 18,000 years ago, the ice started melting and the ocean rose to the level we know now, flooding the passages and generating a wide underground river system like nowhere else on earth. For the mysterious Mayan civilization, who lived here between 300 and 900 AD, the Cenotes (D'zonot = Sacred Well), not only were a fresh water source, but had also an important role in its mythology: they were windows to the "After World" and a key to their afterlife. Ceremonies and rituals were made to the "Underworld Gods". In some caverns you can still find artifacts. Easy The Cenote dives are typically shallow dives (15-30 ft/5-10 m), and open to anyone with an entry level diving experience. It is an easier diving opportunity for all the people who might be scared of the sometimes adverse conditions of the ocean.
Safe The paths you will be using will always be wide enough to have two people swim side by side, always within 120 ft/40 m from a direct access to air and daylight, and your groups wil be a maximum 4 divers per guide. We went on the Mayan Adventure tour offered in the pamphlets in the hotel. My husband and myself and our 4 teens all enjoyed the day. You get picked up at your hotel and driven to Yal Kul lagoon for the first snorkel. This is an underground river joining the ocean. Saw Turtles and a Barracuta. Quite a swim out to the reef though so we wre moving alot and I would have preferred to have had more time in the lagoon with the colourful fish.
the next place was a cenote cave and that was exciting. Just an open cave, no tunnels or anything too scary. Beautiful! Last was an open cenote and the ritual sacrifice of jumping 35 feet into the lake. Well I used the stairs.... Lunch included and it was a great day. Dive in Yucatan's Cenotes
Cenotes (Sinkholes) The natural wonders of the state of Yucatan are innumerable. Some of the most important and unusual are the cenotes (sinkholes) and caves. In the Yucatan there are some 3000 cenotes, with about 1400 actually studies and registered. There are four types of cenotes: those that are completely underground, those that are semi-underground, those that are at land level like a lake or pond, and those that are open wells such as the one at Chichen Itza. Some of them are accessible for swimming and cave diving. Cuzama Cenotes The town of Cuzama is becoming quite popular for the large number of cenotes found there. There is a fun trip that you can do in this area that entails visiting tree cenotes. On a platform buggy pulled bye horses you will travel seven kilometers on interesting paths that add to the sense of adventure. The main cenotes are: Chelentun, Chansinic'che and Bolonchoojol. The Chelentun Cenote is located about three kilometers from the Chunkanan hacienda, about three kilometers south of Cuzama. The water is incredibly blue and clear with excellent visibility. Cenote Zaci Located in the heart of Valladolid, this semi-open cenote is 45meters in diameter and 80 meters deep. This is a popular cenote for swimming in the refreshing emerald green waters. You will see a rare species of eyeless black fish known as "lub". A third of the cenote is covered with stalactites and stalagmites, and there is a walkway around the entire cenote. Cenote Dzitnup or Keken Located seven kilometers southeast of Valladolid, this cenote is underground with a whole in the ceiling. It is probably one of the most photographed cenotes in the Yucatan. Deep, refreshing, crystal-clear waters await you. There is lighting and a guide rope to make it easier.
Cenote Ik-Kil Located in the Eco-archelogical park Ik-Kil, just three kilometers from Chichen Itza and Piste. Called the "Sacred Blue Cenote", it is a perfectly round well type cenote with exuberant vegetation and waterfalls.
