Undersea Adventure in Belize

Extraordinary and exceptionally only begin to describe the diving in Belize. This tiny little country on the western edge of the Caribbean Sea owns the bragging rights to the largest and most prolific reef in the Western Hemisphere. Its majestic undersea world also boasts the three magnificent atolls, nearly 400 species of fish, 70 types of hard coral and the celebrated Blue Hole. Less than a few hours by air from many US locations, Belize is an ideal destination when you consider its tropical climate, temperate waters, variety of resort options and numerous activities in addition to diving. Paralleling Belize’s coast, the spectacular barrier reef creates the offshore boundary for its marine wonderland. Spanning north to south for more than 170 miles, the total area extends offshore nearly 50 miles and includes and endless array of marine life and dive sites. The vast span of living reef encompasses every kind of coral reef known to nature. Its densest and most continuous portion lies along a fault line bout 12 to 20 miles off the mainland’s coast. Although the water is reach with exotic dive places, there are plenty of sites for the not-so-serious- divers. And non-divers won’t find a better place to learn.

Divers can find professional dive operators, and much of the country’s hot diving is closer than they think. In fact the run to the Blue Hole and atolls is actually shorter from Belize City than from Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, and is mostly in protected waters. Staying in Belize City offers the convenience of access so many close-at-hand adventures. Mix and match dive adventure packages allow you to see more of Belize, above and below the sea.
Dangriga is situated about 40 miles south of Belize City. It is a destination loaded with energy, and there’s much to see and do in the nearby villages of Hopkins and Sittee River. South water is a piece of paradise perched atop the reef about 15 miles offshore to the east from Dangriga. This is where you will find two resorts, Blue Marlin lodge and
Pelican Beach Resort. Further down the coast and less than one hour’s drive away is the long, narrow peninsula leading to Placencia. This area is advertised as the springboard to the best diving in Belize. It’s one of the hottest dive destinations in the region. Placencia offers an excellent array of resorts and dive facilities dotted along the peninsula. Most resorts face the sparkling sea, and the reef is only a few minutes away.
