Ek-Balam

Ek Balam, Yucatan.   Ek Balam is a name in Yucatecan Mayan that can be literally translated as “black or dark jaguar”. Founded in the year 100 BC, it was probably one of the most powerful Prehispanic Mayan cities economically, religiously and socially speaking. Containing 45 structures, this archeological site is surrounded bye two stone walls; there is also a third wall between some of the principal buildings. You will also find a ball court, an important series of roads and other monument including the original wells they built called “chultunes’.   The structure shows various architectural styles and influences. These include Puuc influence, from the western coast of Campeche. There are also some details, such as winged idols resembling angels that are unique to this site. The main buildings are devided into two plaza areas. The Acropolis is one of the most voluminous structures in Mesoamerica. Here you will see statues, masks, figurines and hieroglyphs that represent the culture of Yucatan.
Ek-Balam
The construction and decoration of Ek Balam’s buildings was completed with stucco and limestone mortar, not the stone carvings found at Chichen Itza, Coba or the Tulum Ruins.
In addition to the highly decorated and detailed structures, Ek Balam has unique features within its city limits. Sacbes, which are man-made roads, lead into the center of the city that is protected by an unusual wall.
The Mayas took the four cardinal points into great consideration when building their city giving Ek Balam a deeper spiritual significance
