Holbox means “Blackhole” in the Maya language. In the South part of the island, there is a lagoon with dark waters due to the vegetation on its bottom.
Holbox island boasts miles of virgin beaches with white coral sands adorned with beautiful conchs and the green lush vegetation of the water of the sea is amazing here, going from the turquoise blue of the Mexican Caribbean Sea to the incredible green emerald, creating unique sceneries that are home to many endemic species of fauna. You will see wild dolphins jumping close to the shore, flamingoes painting the sunsets in pink.
In Holbox, you will find warm and friendly people. It´s a quiet place where time seems to have stopped. Rent a bike, a moped or a golf cart to move around, as there are not cars. At night there is absolute peace with the sound of the sea and the sky plenty of brilliant stars and dusks are adorned with the magical music of thousands of birds singing nature´s melodies.
Come during summer and enjoy the most incredible experience in the Mexican Caribbean; which is swimming with the whale shark, one of the biggest fish in the world. It reaches 18 meters of size. They eat plankton and nekton, crustaceans, including small sardine, cavalla, tuna and squid.
