Chichen Itza, Yucatan. Chichen Itza. Dating back 1553 years, the famous Mayan pyramids of Chichen Itza are a mere one and a half hours from Merida. The name Chichen Itza is derived from the Mayan language: “Chi” is mouth, “Chen” is well and “Itza” is the tribe that inhabited the area. Chichen Itza is divided in three areas: the north group, distinctly Toltec; the central group, early period; and the area known as the old Chichen. All three can be seen comfortably in one day. Stay for the daily Light & Sound Show held each evening. You can travel to Chichen Itza by booking daily travel agency tours, renting a car or riding public buses. You can do the trip one day or stay over night. There are hotels at Chichen Itza, Pste or Valladolid.
